WHOSE SIDE IS GOD ON?

“In the 1962 film The Longest Day, the phrase “sometimes I wonder whose side God is on” was actually spoken by two different characters on opposite sides:

  1. Major General Gunther Blumentritt (played by Curd Jürgens) says it on the German side while discussing Adolf Hitler’s refusal to wake up and release the reserve panzers.
  2. Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Vandervoort (played by John Wayne) repeats a similar sentiment on the Allied side, frustrated by the poor weather conditions during the D-Day invasion.”

I think it would be a reasonable assumption that both sides of the Normandy invasion were Christian. Moreover, both sides were most likely concerned about the loss of life and were confused and frustrated that God did not appear to be helping their side.

If you consider their question as being from Christians, it is a really odd question.

Let us look at the God as seen through the New Testament, that is the present covenant\agreement between God and Man.

1. The New Testament clearly revolutionized the way to show God our Love.

36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?  37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.  38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.  39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.

MATTHEW 22:36 – 40

Is killing someone in war a way to follow the second greatest commandment: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

2. God created all human beings in his own image. We are all his children and he has infinite love for us and shows us infinite mercy.

If two groups of human beings were killing your children, whose side would you support?

3.  God so loved his human creations that he came down to Earth and lived as a human being, preached love and understanding, and suffered a horrible death for all his human efforts. Jesus established the New Testament (Agreement) between God and humankind.

“Thou shalt not (Not sinning)” is not the New Testament agreement to show God love. One should demonstrate that they have welcomed the Holy Spirit to inspire them to do good works for their neighbour in the name of God, to show love for their neighbours, for the glory of God, and to love God openly for the world to see.

The entire life of Jesus was showing his Father his love by helping everyone who needed His love and aid.

To love God, not sinning is not what the New Testament requires. Doing good acts overrides just not sinning. The churches should be preaching that doing good will devoid our lives of sinning and will manifest our Love of God.

God wants us to evolve as human beings so we can become closer to “His Own Image.” He gave us free will and free choice so that our mind, soul, body, and heart can receive his Grace to voyage toward enhanced spirituality. However, we can freely choice to take another path, not one that God hopes we take.

4. God loves all his children, regardless of ethnic or racial group, social status, psychological condition, whom they love, emotional capabilities, and behaviour. So, do you think he would side with anyone who is killing His Children?

As Pope Leo XIV urges, “Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace. Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue. Not with the desire to dominate the other, but to encounter them. In the light of Easter, let us allow ourselves to be amazed by Christ, and to allow our hearts to be transformed by His immense love for us.”
